The nail-biting extended matchup that saw the Dodgers overcome the Toronto Blue Jays by one run attracted a total 51 million spectators across the US, Canada, and Japan territories. MLB reported this marks the highest-rated Fall Classic finale since the 1991 showdown between the Twins and Braves.

Broadcast Viewership Breakdown

Last Saturday’s memorable contest drew 27.33 million viewers on Fox channels, its Spanish-language channel and Fox’s digital services. Per Nielsen, it was the second highest-rated broadcast of the week.

It also is the most-watched Fall Classic game after the 2017 final game involving the Dodgers and Houston Astros, which averaged 29.07 million. This represents a 16% increase compared to the last finale featuring the Nationals and Astros, which attracted 23.19M.

In the Nielsen ratings, Game 6 ranked 4th, the fourth game ranked seventh, Game 5 was eighth, and the third game landed in 13th position.

International Audience Numbers

In the Canadian market, the climactic game recorded 11.6 million watchers on Sportsnet and the French-language TVA Sports channel. This made it the most-watched English-language program in Canada since the 2010 edition Vancouver Winter Olympics.

In the Japanese market, where the deciding game began at 9 p.m. in the local time zone, it averaged 12 million viewers. This came after last Friday’s Game 6 – where World Series MVP Yamamoto gave up a single run in six innings – drew 13.1M viewers, making it the highest-rated World Series matchup on a single network in the country.

Overall Totals and Trends

The full seven-game series averaged 15.71 million viewers on Fox, a two percent increase from the previous year’s Dodgers-Yankees matchup. This represents the first time after 2015 and 2016 that the World Series has seen viewership increases for two straight years.

Counting the Game 1 telecast on the Univision network, the complete US average reached 16.1 million. The total Fall Classic average in Japan was 9.7 million and 8.1M in Canada.

The full MLB Postseason on Fox, FS1 and FS2 drew over 8 million viewers, an 8% increase over the previous year and Fox’s strongest playoff ratings since the 2017 season.

Major League Baseball reported that the World Series was broadcast in over 200 nations and regions by 44 broadcasting partners in sixteen different languages.
